About the
Crest
Most
Reverend Luc Matthys
Bishop of
Armidale Diocese
The motto is “Deus incrementum dat” taken and
adapted from I Corinthians 3:7. “It is God who gives
the increase”. Look up I Corinthians Chapter 3 to
see the context.
The crest has the usual setting of the motto at the
bottom, with a cross behind the shield topped by an
episcopal hat with green tassels. There are six
tassels
on each side, for a bishop. An archbishop would have
ten tassels.
The crest itself. The two left side panels are taken
from the Armidale diocesan crest. Both refer to images
from the book of the Apocalypse. The Lamb of God in
glory (the ensign) on the book, in which are written the
names of the Elect. Secondly, a reference to the
Blessed Virgin Mary (Maria Regina) as the woman with
twelve stars.
The right side of the panel of the crest, shows the lion
of Flanders, on a golden background. I was born in the
province of Flanders, Belgium, where I received my early
Catholic upbringing.
